How to Ride Seoul Buses: Colors, Numbers, Tapping & Transfers

A respectful six-step guide to route colors, direction checks, front-door boarding, stop buttons, tap-off, and transfer discounts.

Riding a Seoul bus for the first time: six calm steps

You do not need to decode every number. Check the route number, destination direction, and stop name together, then follow this sequence from the curb to your transfer.[1][2]

1. Treat color as a clue, not your decision

Blue buses are trunk routes, green buses are branch or local links, yellow buses circulate within an area, and red buses connect the wider capital region with Seoul.[1] Always confirm the number and direction in an app and at the stop.

2. Check the number and direction together

The number identifies the route, but the opposite-direction stop may be across the road. Check the destination-side stop name and expected vehicle, then match the number on the bus front. An N prefix marks a night bus.[1][2]

3. Board at the front and tap

Most city buses board through the front door. Tap a transport card such as Tmoney on the reader.[2] Many Seoul buses do not accept cash, so prepare a card, though this does not mean every bus is cashless. Separate cards are simplest for a group. See the first-day T-money guide.

4. Prepare for your stop

Follow your position in a map app or the onboard announcement. Press the stop button about one stop early, then move carefully when the bus has stopped.

5. Tap again when leaving

Tap the rear-door reader before you leave. Tap-off matters for distance-based calculation and the next bus or subway transfer discount.[1]

6. A transfer is a discount rule, not automatically a free trip

Tap off the first vehicle and onto the next. Seoul's published rule allows 30 minutes, extended to 60 minutes from 21:00 to 07:00, with up to four transfers (five boardings).[1] Reboarding the same vehicle or route does not count. Distance-based additions may apply, and cash fares receive no transfer discount.[1][2]
