How to ride the Seoul subway for the first time: gates to last trains
The key is to check line number/color, terminal station for your direction, local/express status, and transfer corridor—not just the station name. Operational details were researched on September 12, 2026; recheck timetables and the 10-minute re-entry coverage on travel day.
The 20-second check
1. Save the destination’s line and station number.
2. Identify the terminal station in your direction.
3. If the train is express, confirm your stop.
4. During a transfer, follow Transfer—not Exit.

1. Prepare a card or ticket
Tap Tmoney or another transit card at the gate. Without one, buy a single-use card at any station machine: it adds a KRW 500 deposit to the fare. Insert it into the refund machine at your destination to recover the deposit.[1] The adult transit-card base fare is KRW 1,550 for up to 10 km, plus distance additions.[7]

2. Enter and choose the direction
Tap only one card and check the reader response. Before descending, verify the line color/number and the display’s destination/terminal station. One line can have branches or different terminals, so “up/down” alone is not enough. Official visitor guidance uses line colors and station numbers.[2]
If you entered the wrong side, first look for an internal connection. If none exists, do not force an emergency gate; use the staff call button.
3. Transfer without following Exit
At a transfer station, stay inside the paid area and follow Transfer signs carrying the next line’s color and number.[1] A normal rail-to-rail transfer continues without exiting, but distance additions and special surcharges such as Shinbundang Line can apply. “Transfer” does not always mean completely free.

4. Express: confirm the stopping pattern first
Express trains do not operate on every line or stop at every station. Check both the Express/급행 label and whether your destination is served. Line 9’s official timetable separates local/express by origin, direction, weekday, Saturday, and holiday.[3] “Express Bus Terminal” is a station name, not proof the train is express. Use Seoul Metro Cyber Station for official route lookup.[4]
5. There is no single midnight last train
Last trains vary by station, direction, day, and terminal. A late train may terminate before your destination, so check the departure station, displayed terminal, and connecting line’s last train. Official data also warns timetable data can differ from actual arrivals.[5] Use the operator timetable and platform display that day.

6. Wrong direction or missed stop
Get off at the next station and look for an internal passage to the opposite platform. If you must exit, ask staff. Seoul’s “re-enter within 10 minutes” policy is conditional: after tapping out, re-enter the same station and same line within 10 minutes, on covered operator sections, using an eligible transit card. It applies once per journey; single-use and season tickets are excluded, and distance additions may remain.[6] Do not extend the 2023 rollout list to the entire network without checking the station or calling 1577-1234.
Mistake-proof checklist
• Before tap: line number + terminal direction
• Before boarding: local/express + destination stop
• During transfer: Transfer, not Exit
• At night: connecting last train, not only the first leg
• At an error: call staff rather than forcing a gate
