Olive Young Shopping & Tax Refunds: A Traveler’s Practical Guide

When to show your passport, how immediate and general refunds differ, and how to keep purchases and paperwork ready for departure.

Olive Young shopping and tax refunds

Olive Young is a nationwide Korean health-and-beauty retailer.[1] But do not assume every branch, till or product offers the same refund method. Look for a Tax Refund/Tax Free sign and ask before payment whether that checkout offers an immediate refund.

Before visiting

1. Carry your original passport; do not assume a photo or copy will work.

2. Note product names, sizes and quantities. Separate testers from products you will keep unopened for export.

3. Recheck the exact branch and hours with the Seoul map-app guide.

4. Use the Korea cash-and-card guide for payment backup.

A low-stress shopping order

Read shelf prices and promotion conditions, then compare volume and set contents. Products with similar names can be different sizes or bundles. KTO lists cosmetics among potentially refundable taxable goods, but excludes goods opened or used before export.[2]

Immediate versus general refund

Immediate refund: an eligible traveler is verified by passport at a participating store and pays after the tax is deducted. There is no separate airport collection step for that transaction.[2]

General refund: you first pay the tax-inclusive price and receive a refund voucher, then complete the route stated by the provider—downtown, mobile, airport or another supported channel. Customs export confirmation may be required at departure.[2][3]

KTO currently publishes a minimum purchase and separate per-transaction/trip limits for immediate refunds, plus a receipt limit for downtown refunds.[2] These figures and operator rules can change, so recheck the KTO guide and the participating store's notice on the day you pay rather than relying on a hardcoded number here. Do not assume splitting or combining receipts guarantees eligibility.

At checkout

1. Before scanning, ask: “Tax refund available? Immediate refund?”

2. Present your passport directly to staff and shield personal data.

3. Check whether tax was already deducted or a refund voucher was issued.

4. Keep the receipt, voucher and payment card until departure; photograph the provider instructions.

5. If returning an item, ask how the refund record will be reversed.

Before departure and at the airport

For a general refund, check whether customs needs to see the goods before you check the bag. Korea Customs says export confirmation can require the passport, sales certificate and purchased goods in unopened, unused condition; after kiosk input, travelers selected for inspection must visit customs.[3] KTO also requires qualifying goods to leave Korea within its published deadline.[2]

Final checklist

• Original passport ready before payment

• Confirm participating branch and immediate vs general route

• Keep exported goods unopened and unused

• Save receipt and refund voucher

• Check customs before checking baggage

• Separately verify airline, security and destination-customs rules for liquids, medicines and supplements
