The Complex Accountability Web Behind a $3.2 Billion AI Data Center

When a fire broke out in June at the $3.2 billion Lake Mariner AI data-centre construction site in Somerset, New York, firefighters entered without a working alarm or suppression system and found several dry hydrants; operator TeraWulf later described safety improvements, Ars Technica reported. Operations, leasing, financial guarantees and computing demand are split among TeraWulf, Fluidstack, Google and Anthropic, blurring who is accountable for safety, environmental and financial consequences. The site may draw up to 500 megawatts while supporting an estimated 35 to 40 permanent jobs, and residents are questioning electricity costs, constant noise and whether clean-energy claims can be verified.
