Lords call for AI 'kill switch' powers in UK

A group of UK peers led by Lord Tim Clement-Jones proposed amending the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill so the government could deactivate powerful AI systems and data centres if national security were threatened. Supporters describe the power as a last-resort, democratically accountable way to stop a runaway system before it compromises critical infrastructure; it is one of 65 amendments debated. A separate AI Security Bill is due to be introduced on 8 September, but both proposals require government backing to progress.
